A local conspiracy theory has found its way into Cape Town's after-dark warehouse of live music, Discotheque Fridays and cool-searching youth.


According to the claims of Facebook group Open Your Minds SA, the owners of popular nightclub The Assembly are members of the Illuminati, a secret society thought to be seated in the wings of powerful corporations and governments.

Using the club as a business front for otherwise conspiratory dealings, the rascals continue to sell two-for-one Zamaleks to bespectacled electroheads and imprint sublimial codes into their promotional posters as they hungrily pursue New World Order. 

Looks like an opportunity for another Dan Brownesque bestseller is on the way.

Remember I had those theories about who could possibly be behind the mysterious signage spotted in central Cape Town and surrounds? Turns out it's an 'interactive social project slash satirical experiment' and it has a name: 0834319513.

Intrigued citizens have even dialled the number, reaching a voice recording that'll 'probably call back later.' I imagine there's heavy call traffic for 'Nose Jobs' in Fresnaye, or 'Dassie Biltong' in Woodstock.

Here is the collection of signs which have appeared all over the city in the past few months (except for the odd one to fall victim to night-time revelry in Long Street).

On the wing

On the ground is where most of us spend our lives. As chldren we dig holes in the ground and soil our best Sunday clothes. As adults we work towards owning a piece of ground in the hope that we can make something of it

Boo Radley's is a bistro bar at 62 Hout Street, central Cape Town.

it is the setting i'd imagine a broody character of mine to exist in. perhaps sitting alone at the bar sipping gin and tonic, pondering something that happened outside. lined up before the bar counter are a row of empty chairs, at the end of which sits a young girl. she's there for a quick pick-me-up and an early dinner. perhaps it is raining outside. eventually she will lie sprawled across her double-we are pretty certain of this-while the honky-tonk mourns the Grand Old Opry. both are searching for a spirituality that simply cannot be found in spirits.

lo and behold!

uh-oh! look out one small seed. brand new popular culture magazine out ! what is cape town going to do about this one? take some more nude photos of breasts and hairy chests, have two guys make out against a saturated background, or dress up some hipster dolly and photograph her in compromising positions? how about some ironic literature on current affairs(and by these i mean the latest this side of harrington street), or some especially slick review of the latest electronic act at fiction? i wait in anticipation and hope it is worth a read. or else jack parow might try to appropriate its coolness in another hit single.
