home is where i belong

what makes the meaning of home?

A place of refuge and rest; an asylum; as, a home for outcasts; a home for the blind; hence, esp., the grave; the final rest; also, the native and eternal dwelling place of the soul.

for me, home is a safe place for ritual and routine. a place of security and rest. it may also be a place of conflict at times. home is a tradition. home is my Land. it is made by the heat of the fire glowing in the hearth, the loud conversation, the chinking of wine glasses, the piles of dirty dishes in the kitchen sink. home is act of the sweeping under the rug. a polite knock on the door. perhaps the sing-song ring of the bell.

home is affectionate. it is close to my heart. it makes provision for my wanting. its roots spread deep and delving into the airy pits of my youth, down into the soil and under the foundations of the house. the soul that i have cultivated is owed to my home. home holds marriages and children and family reunions. it hosts feuds and disagreements. it teaches us manners and the like.

and when two people divorce their home is split at the beams and walls collapse. suitcases are left in the corridor. the very roof is shaken down. and all is exposed and raw and chaffed.
